Ryan Brown (Pennsylvania, United States, 1977). He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, at Bucks Country Community College, Newtown and at Kutztown University, Pennsylvania. He has presented ten solo exhibitions at galleries in the United States, Mexico and Spain. He attended art residencies in Germany and Peru. Currently he lives and works between Lima and New York.
Ryan Brown (Pensilvania, Estados Unidos, 1977). Realizó estudios en School of Visual Arts, Nueva York; en Bucks Country Community College, Newtown y en Kutztown University, Pensilvania. Ha inaugurado diez exposiciones individuales hasta la actualidad en galerías de Estados Unidos, México y España. Ha realizado residencias artísticas en Alemania y el Perú. Vive y trabaja entre Nueva York y Lima.
- How would you define your artistic style?
- I would define the style of this work in a way of… I would describe it as something anonymous. A practice of lifting certain styles from art history, certain formats like what I capture here in these works which, base on a template of an auction catalog page is something informal but it allows me to enter the work with those elements. That is the style I feel comfortable working in.
- ¿Cómo defines tu estilo artístico?
- Definiría el estilo de esta obra de un modo… lo describiría como algo anónimo. Una práctica de tomar algunos estilos de la historia del arte, algunos formatos. Lo que plasmo aquí, en esta obra que está basada en una plantilla de una página de catálogo de subastas, es algo informal pero me permite aproximarme a la obra con esos elementos. Ese es el estilo con el que me siento cómodo cuando trabajo.
- What is the process of your visual art production?
- So the process is something based on I’d say a form of repetition. I am not starting new every time I have a sense of composition that is premeditated like the forms and all are kind of based on something that I have been using throughout the whole series then it is kind of a destructive process there is a lot of kind of working the paper, working the surface to give an effect of like age or history haven’t passed.
- ¿En qué consiste tu proceso de producción plástica?
- El proceso es algo que está basado en lo que llamaría una forma de repetición. No empiezo algo nuevo cada vez, tengo un sentido de la composición que es premeditado como las formas y todo lo demás está basado en algo que he estado usando a lo largo de toda la serie. Por tanto, es en realidad algo como un proceso destructivo, hay mucho trabajo en el papel, trabajo en la superficie para darle un efecto, como si el tiempo o la historia no hubieran pasado.
- What is your next project?
- The next project? I don’t, I don’t know what exactly is going to be, haha. Meaning I don’t have an image what it would look like. But I’d say this that I am very interesting in relocating myself here to Peru, to Lima. I feel very comfortable working here. And again for me it is a matter of getting, setting, arranging like studio space, that is what I kind of see like the next project is, sort of setting up an area, feeling kind of settling myself in a place where I can start and responding to things that I am feeling around me, ideas that arise while I am doing all the preparation and even things like for me it is very important to be influenced by very common things, like, again, for me it is just so exciting to ride on the buses, for instance, it gives ideas and I think about things, little by little I will come, so I don’t have, I never begin necessarily with a clear idea of what it is going to do, and maybe it is better to answer to the last question about the process. It sort of grows itself and I as an artist I kind of feel it is my responsibility to manage the direction or the development of an idea, where, what ultimately the form is going to take, where is going to be shown that kind of thing, so we will see.
- ¿Cuál es tu próximo proyecto?
- ¿El siguiente proyecto? No sé. No sé exactamente lo que será, jaja. Quiero decir que no tengo una imagen de cómo se verá. Pero sí puedo decir que estoy muy interesado en mudarme aquí a Perú, a Lima. Me siento muy cómodo trabajando aquí. Y, de nuevo, para mí, se trata de encontrar, establecer, organizar un espacio para un estudio. Eso es lo que veo como mi siguiente proyecto. Organizar un área que me haga sentir que me estoy instalando en un lugar donde puedo empezar y responder a las cosas que siento a mí alrededor, a las ideas que surgen mientras hago todos los preparativos. Para mí es importante que las cosas que me influencian sean muy comunes. De nuevo, para mí, es muy emocionante viajar en los buses, por ejemplo, porque me da ideas y pienso en las cosas. Poco a poco llegará. Es decir, no tengo, nunca comienzo necesariamente con una idea clara de qué es lo que va a crear y tal vez es mejor responder a la última pregunta sobre el proceso. Prácticamente crece por sí mismo y yo, como artista, siento que es mi responsabilidad manejar la dirección o el desarrollo de una idea, qué forma tendrá finalmente, dónde se mostrará, ese tipo de cosas. Así que ya veremos.
